Integrated Materials & process unit was established with the purpose to support the inter-disciplinary of the advanced research areas/clusters leading by the AMMC. With expertise in materials science, chemistry, physics, and mechanical engineering, our group studies the synthesis, properties, and integration of advanced materials and their application in various engineering applications. A current emphasis is more on membrane separation process for water and gas applications starting with thermodynamic and kinetic of phase inversion, effects of processing parameters, formulations and additives towards membrane performance.  Other research areas include advanced engineering materials i.e composite and sandwich structure, thin film and coating, , implant, synthesize and processing of nanoscale materials, simulation and modeling on porous structure (FEA) and Design of Experiment (DOE). A strong emphasis is placed on the hetero-integration of multi-composition,multi-structure and multi-function especially at nanoscale, and by doing so, creating a new generation of integrated advanced systems with unprecedented performance or unique functions to break the boundaries of traditional technologies. Most of the research activity here also is strongly support with a good lab facilities i.e: preparation, processing and characterizatio with an expert academician/postgraduate student from varies background.

Sustainable Polymer Engineering-intro

Sustainable Polymer Engineering group integrates sustainability issues that focus on the science and technology of polymeric materials into research, education, and public outreach initiatives. Members of the center concentrate their research efforts on harnessing the renewable, functional, degradable and non-toxic ingredients provided by nature for tomorrow's advanced plastics, foams, adhesives, elastomers, coatings and other macromolecular materials. In addition to the research mission of the group, members also foster outreach activities to educate future scientists and the public about the science and technology of sustainability.

Sustainable Manufacturing and Recycle Technology(SMART) Introduction

Definition of Sustainable Manufacturing:

The creation of manufactured products that use processes that minimize negative environmental impacts, conserve energy and natural resources, are safe for employees, communities, and consumers and are economically sound

Interest in Sustainable Manufacturing with particularly on Waste Management and Recycling activities is not a new phenomenon that has just been thought about in the 20th century as mankind has always recycled in one form or another. Today with increasing public awareness and research into the many environmental implications, materials recycling is now of paramount importance due to a number of reasons for instance; incineration and landfilling produces contamination of the air and the groundwater, recycling is extremely energy efficient (large consumption of fossil fuel energy), large scale use of some metal elements may overwhelm the existing primary sources, recycling cuts down on the need for mining raw materials and hence saves large scale destruction of the natural environment, and awareness of public opinion and finally the needs of development of legislation such as i.e. the end of life products directive.

The ‘Sustainable Manufacturing and Recycling Technology’ or called SMART research cluster was conceptualized after visited several recycling facilities in Selangor and Johore sates of Malaysia. These visits sparked miles of conversations regarding materials management and resource utilization. Further discussion with other research team members at Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Center (AMMC) led to the question of "What University has its arms around Waste Management and Recycling?" The answer was that no university had a comprehensive program and what better place to fill this void. From conceptual endorsement, the internal process to implement the SMART Research Cluster which was established under AMMC Center of Excellent, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) was initially established this year. Very much thankful to the Head of AMMC, Assoc. Professor Dr. Mustaffa Ibrahim for his sincere helps and contributions about SMART initiated.  

SMART research cluster currently owns and operates several facilities on metals recycling in the AMMC Center of Excellent which includes; Cold Press 50 ton, Hot Press Forging, and Hot Extrusion. At present, each of three metals recycling facilities is designed to run the recycling process of aluminium in the sustainability environment for which materials recycled will be undergone below their melting temperature. This is to tally with the our basic principle of Sustainable Manufacturing as mentioned in the definition above. We also have several post-graduates students (PhD and Master) working with these three recycling facilities and most of them were attached under research grant schemes provided by the government and university fundings respectively.

Hopefully in the next directive, the idea and spirit of SMART will be fully materialized in the AMMC to address a wide variety of waste and by product-related topics with consideration to entire life cycle of these materials starting from initial generation to end of life as indicated by exhaustion of resource value. Hence, it is hoped that it could contributes to sustainable manufacturing and management of wastes and byproducts as resources and/or energy in environmentally acceptable and compliant manners, as well as provides input for education and policy-related topics.
